The accelerate tutorial program is not being offered this year
Accelerate is a tutorial program started by CCCC at the Ezell Hester Community Center in Boynton Beach. As a tutorial program, Accelerate is not unique. It attempts to solve the same problem that every tutorial program attempts to solve: How to increase the performance of struggling students.
However, based on our experience in and around the school system, we see an even bigger problem.
In our opinion, the schools are simply not designed to accelerate students who have fallen behind. Those students may be pulled out for extra help, or given easier work than their peers, but the fact remains, that at the end of the school year, most likely, they will
still be behind.
Class size is one factor. Parental involvement is another. Low expectations is a third. The list can go on and on. All this tells us is that the schools desperately need our help.
Parents and community leaders must get more involved in educating our students in and outside of the school center. Our plan is one of agumentation, helping our local schools rather than working at cross purposes, using the same resources they use in a small group setting in the community.
