The accelerate tutorial program is not being offered this year

Accelerate is a tutorial program started by CCCC at the Ezell Hester Community Center in Boynton Beach. As a tutorial program, Accelerate is not unique. It attempts to solve the same problem that every tutorial program attempts to solve: How to increase the performance of struggling students.

However, based on our experience in and around the school system, we see an even bigger problem. In our opinion, the schools are simply not designed to accelerate students who have fallen behind. Those students may be pulled out for extra help, or given easier work than their peers, but the fact remains, that at the end of the school year, most likely, they will still be behind.

Class size is one factor. Parental involvement is another. Low expectations is a third. The list can go on and on. All this tells us is that the schools desperately need our help. Parents and community leaders must get more involved in educating our students in and outside of the school center. Our plan is one of agumentation, helping our local schools rather than working at cross purposes, using the same resources they use in a small group setting in the community.

Our partners in this effort include:

The Ezell Hester Community Center
Ezell Hester provides the space, most of the students, and a wonderful and caring staff who go out of their way to help us.

The Mentor Center of Palm Beach County
The Mentor Center has helped us obtain high quality liability insurance and to develop a set of policy documents that we use to run the program.

The Boyton Beach City Library
Partnered with us in an effort to increase the performance of our students through Reading. Purchased the high quality resources that we use today.

Poinciana Elementary School
Principal Karen Whetsell was there when we first started and donated the first set of reading kits that we used as materials in our totorial program. We have seen some of her students improve through our application of the resources she has given to us.
